Happy Day

I love summer days when I can just throw on a comfy knit dress and head out the door.  Whoever invented knit wear should be awarded a Nobel Peace Prize because they are way too comfy to be considered not in your bed all day clothes.  It's amazing what a couple ruffles can do to make a dress from blah to fab?!

What's your favorite summer wear?

Mismatch Suit

In my head, suits = matching pants/skirt + jacket.  So whenever I buy suits, I always made sure it goes togther.  This resulted in suits typically in the black, grey, navy or brown colors since I don't want to buy a purple suit and end up looking like Barney the dinosaur.  Buying matching suits resulted to wearing them together and hence limiting my fashion creativity.

I don't know what happened in my head but about 6 months ago, a light suddenly came on and figured out that I can mix and match my suits with things that I already own.  And this has increased my outfit potentials exponentially!!!

I do still wear matching suits when I know I have a meeting where everyone will be in their banker suits.  But I must say, wearing mixing things up is a lot more fun.  It's funny how our brain works - it's gets precondidtioned one way and than that's it.

Do you mix and match your suits or do you tend to stick to the same suit pieces?

Minnie Mouse

Happy Thursday everyone!  I could've name this post polka dots x 3 but my husband says I look like Minnie Mouse today (hence the post title).  When I put this outfit together, she did not cross my mind.  I liked how feminine everything came together.

I am not a fan of Forever 21 (I rarely shop there and have no idea how I ended up buying a top from there).  There's nothing wrong with the store but it's geared toward a much younger generation and the cut of their clothing is not made for my more mature figure. (hmmm...maybe somewhere before having a child & turning 28?)

Heading to Forever 21 is like a guilty pleasure, like watching reality shows.  It's fun to go in there to see the trends and find all kinds of inexpensive goodies.  But I don't want to be caught coming out of the store.

Are there stores that you shop at that you would consider a guilty pleasure?

A Repeat of Polka Dots

This outfit is kind of the same as Monday's outfit but different.  Seen here  It's the same formula: polka dots & floral and blazer with pencil skirt.  I really surprised myself as I was putting this outfit together.  Before blogging, I would never have thought to put this skirt and top together.  My old self  would have stuck with 1 print and that's it.

Being a blogging newbie (3 weeks only), I am already starting to see a trend in my work wardrobe.  I really like pencil skirts.  I think they work for me becasue you can dress them down or up depending on the top or jacket. (I am so glad it's acceptable not to wear panty hose anymore...I can't imagine wearing them in the thick of summer!)  I have a ton of pants but tend to wear them more in the cooler months.  I will do my best to post some pant outfits of these days.

Do you have a work style that works for you?

A Simple Knit Dress

I am so glad how technology has improved clothing!  Today I am wearing a ponte knit dress from Banana Republic. If fit properly, knit wear can be used for work.  As long as the cut is not body hugging (no visible panty lines) and the knit is of heavier substance.  This is a perfect example of a knit dress that is work appropriate.  It's not too tight and I love that it gives so I can eat and feel comfortable after lunch.

Other fabrics that I love are:
  • Polyester that feels like silk but doesn't wrinkle as quickly and typically cost a lot less
  • Washable silk
  • Jeans with lycra -  I can't even live without stretch in my jeans!
  • Cotton Strech - I always hated cotton tops becasue there was no give.  Now you can move comfortably in them
  • Dry fit for working out - I can't run in a cotton t-shirt any more, it gets all yucky from the sweat and feels way too heavy
Now if they can really make wrinkle free clothing that really does not wrinkle that would be so awesome.  Is it just me or do you still iron wrinkle free clothes?  Or how about the linen look without the wrinkles?

What are some of your favorite fabrics?

I Love Polka Dots

Polka Dots are one of my favorite prints.  Why? I have no idea but I go crazy for them when I see it at the store, it's like a kid in a candy store.....any combo will do for me.  Something about these dots just makes me happy.

I am always hesitant to mix prints but pokla dots print is pretty easy to mix.  As long as there are similar background colors you are good to go.  This one was a no brainer since my skirt has black & white in it.  As I work in a relatively conservative office, more extreme pattern mixing would be inappropriate.  Maybe I will give it a try with more bold patterns on the weekend.

Do you mix patterns and do you have rule/formula that you go by?

Casual Brightness

I wore this outfit for an early dinner with some friends visiting from Hawaii.  I had just finished work so I wanted to be in something fun and comfy.  Of course, I put on a tee shirt and jeans and wanted to wear flats.  It felt a bit too laid back so I threw on the necklace & the blazer and what a difference that made!  I feel like my outfit went from blah to wow by just adding some finishing touches.  Isn't it amazing how by using some accessories you can totally change your look.

Do you have a go to piece to add a little zing to your outfit?

Dressy Shorts

I have seen a lot of photos of people wearing shorts not only in the day time or to the beach but at night to dinner and making shorts dressy by adding a sparkly top or heels.  See Here  I wanted to take this out on a test drive and see if I could pull it off.

I wore this outfit to dinner when I was in Las Vegas.  My outfit leans toward a bit on the casual side.  It worked for me since it was 100+ degree weather and our dinner place was not very fancy.  I didn't bring any heels with me since I knew I would be doing a lot of walking.  I think my top made my outfit dressier but my wedges made it a little more casual.  The fabric of the shorts and the cut is important to make it an evening attire. Fringed shorts or daisy dukes would not be recommended. My shorts was a sateen material so it did feel a littler more dressier but I would not have felt dressy enough to go to a white linen restaurant.

Do you wear shorts for an evening out?  How do you make it work?

A Sea of Blue

I am really loving this outfit today.  I was afraid that I was too blue when when I put this outfit together.  But when I put it on ...it all seems to work.  I used blues today because the top has a hint of turquoise in it.  I think the belt really ties it all together.

So I just realized that I used this swearter twice this week.  (Worn here)  Is that a fashion faux pas?  If it is...it's meant to be broken!  My question of the day is - how frequently do you cycle through your wardrobe?  I must admit -  I need to attend shoppers anonymous becasue I have way too much clothes/shoes/jewelry for 1 person.  I started taking pictures of my outfits as a way to remember what I wore and used Pintrest (Follow me here) to catalogue it.  A 150 outfits later and I have barely scratched the surface of my closet.  And yes, I do reuse some of the same pieces (like this blue cardi).  By starting to take pictures and using this blog to express my thoughts, I know I must shop my closet before the stores.  (I think my husband is doing cartwheels as he reads this.)

I Love Trains!

No I don't really love trains but my 4 year does.  When he saw me this morning, he asked me where was my train.  I was a little confused with his comment...he says "you have train tracks on your shirt"  Totally made me smile how kids look at things so differently.

I find it is sometimes tough to make my outfit more me when I work in a conservative environment.  To kick it up a notch today, I put on my leopard heel and the fun cutout top.  How do you make your work outfits more you?

Can I have a Mai Tai with that?

Aloha Kakahiaka!  This means good morning in Hawaiian.  This dress reminds of a hotel that I stayed in Maui years ago with my hubby.  The hotel was on the older side and the bedspread was probably from the 70's.  My dress, I hope, does not evoke a bed spread but it does have a bit of a retro tropical vibe.

Maybe it's the effect on taking a mini vacation but I am ready for another one!  This dress puts me in the mood to kick it and relax for the day.  Not in the cards for me today but I can day dream.

We do not have any more vacation plans for the year.  I need to start thinking about heading Hawaii to visit my family and finding a 1/2 marathon to visit a new destination.  What are your vacation plans for the summer?

A World of Color

With the change of seasons in California, I notice that my wardrobe naturally becomes brighter as the days are longer and the weather is warmer.  Don't get me wrong, I love my black, greys and browns but they get a little boring after while.  Today, the colors of my outfit was inspired by the beautiful colorful Banana Republic top.  There are so many colors to highlight in this top that I can't wait to pair it next time with some greens or purples.
This top is a bit too casual for my work so I wore my cardi all day which is fine since it's I find myself working in a meat locker.  I am not sure if it's the yellow skirt or the pink heels that screams look at me today.  I normally would have worn nude heels to tone this down a bit but what the heck - the yellow is so attention grabbing ...what's a little more color?

So I have a total of 7 colors in this outfit (there's some purple & green on the top).  I think this is my personal best in how many colors I wear at one time.  I think I tend to stick with 2 or 3 colors at a time.   What's your limit on colors without looking like a bag of skittles?

Road Trip Ready

We took a weekend family trip to viva Las Vegas.  The drive is about 260 miles from Southern CA but with the weekend traffic that's about 5+ hours.  I am not a big road trip fan and would have preferred to fly but with ticket prices so high - it's much more economical to drive.  What did we do with the money that we saved from airfare? EAT!!! I think I ate enough for a small village this weekend.  I will need to work out for 20 hours+ a day and not eat for the next week to burn off what I ate.

My plan was to take some nice food porn photos to share but with my skills, all the food pictures came out horrible.  Either that or I was way too busy eating that I forgotten to take pictures until the food was gone.

Some highlights of places we tried:
  • Serendipity at Cesar's Palace  (I do not recommend walking from Mandalay Bay to Cesar's Palace - it took us 3+ hours with the kids in 100+ weather!)
  • Yama Sushi  off Flamingo & Marilyn (A must if you are a sushi lover! It's all you can eat and it's great quality)
  • Spice Market Buffet at Planet Hollywood (like all buffets - go hungry - they have different cuisines like American, Italian, Asian, Mexican, and Mediterranean)

With the long drive, I made sure I was 100% comfy with my clothing.  This outfit is all knit wear so it doesn't wrinkle up in the car and it stretches.  The pink accents added a little fun factor.  What's your go to wear for road trips?

A Little Color in My Life

I am only working a 1/2 day today so I was pretty lazy to get dressed up for work.  Whenever I am lazy, a dress is my go to thing in the closet...why? I don't have to think!  However, once I put the dress on - it felt so dark and gloomy that I wanted to add some color to brighten it.  I have no problems wearing dark colors but it must've been my mood that wanted a little pick me up.

Do you use your wardrobe to help you brighten up your day?

By the way, we are taking a short family vacay this weekend.  No post from me for a couple of days.  I will do my best to take some pics.  Enjoy your weekend!

Animal Prints

I have a confession to make:  whenever I wear any animal prints, I feel like making claws with my fingers and go ARRGGHHH.  I don't know what it is, but it makes me feel a little old lady-ish or cougar-ish (I don't really constitute myself as a cougar since 1. I don't have any fake body parts, 2. I haven't had any plastic surgery,  and 3.  I don't have a cub).  I know that animal prints, when used properly, are a great print but I have a hard time with it.  This skirt is a good medium of animal prints for me....the cut is conservative for someone like me and the print makes this outfit a little fun.

How do you feel about animal prints in your wardrobe?

Since I don't use a fancy camera (my iphone) these pictures are not the highest quality.  I am looking to buy a real camera...any suggestions for a beginner?  But I thought it was odd how my shoes almost look brown in these pictures.  They are actually a pair of ruby red heels

Summer Suiting

Summer is right around the corner and the heat is on!  I am a wimp when it comes to being too hot or cold.  Summer dressing is always a dilemma for me because it's so cold in the office and so hot outdoors.  There are days that I must wear a suit to work and it is just too hot to have a heavy suit jacket on.  My office is like a freezer so even in the summer, I have my mini heater at my feet (shh....it's not suppose to be there since it's a fire code violation) and a bunch of emergency sweaters on my chair.

This eyelet blazer was the perfect answer to my dilemma.  Light enough that I can wear  outdoors and the eyelet look makes it seem more summery.  Do you have an essential work summer piece of clothing?

50 Shades of Grey

Yesterday my outfit reminded Jason of  The Wizard of Oz.  Today's outfit reminds me of 50 Shades of Grey by E L James.  No - there are no handcuffs, whips or chains anywhere on this outfit but the variation of grays on the dress does remind me of Christian Grey.  The trilogy of books have been extremely popular with women.  They are the adult version of the Twilight series.  I am a big book worm and read through the Trilogy in about week's time.  My personal take on the books is that they should have stopped at the 1st one.  It got a little too repetitive and neatly pulled together for me.

What is on your list of summer reading?  I've got a stack of books to read which includes:
The Drop by Michael Connolly
Goodnight Nobody by Jennifer Weiner
Kill Alex Cross by James Patterson
Zero Day by David Baldacci
True Evil by Greg Iles

There's No Place Like Home

Happy Monday!  I hope everyone had an awesome weekend.  As a woman of certain age, I was due for my hair color treatment.  I am one of the lucky few that has had greys since high school so hair coloring is something that I've done forever.  Luckily, I have a great hair stylist (Traci at the Loft Salon in Manhattan Beach) and she covers my greys very well.

I wore this outfit to putz around this weekend.  I lover wearing Maxi skirts/dresses because it's like wearing pajamas without looking like I just rolled out of bed.  I paired this skirt with the black and white stripe tee and I immediately went for the red belt.  The stripes and the red combo evokes Paris to me.  I am not sure if the outcome is very Parisian.  Do you wear clothes that remind you of some exotic location?

By the way, Jason says these shoes looks like Dorothy's from Wizard of Oz?  Do you agree?
