This week, I wanted to share with you about something that I started a few months ago and it has helped me with diversifying the type of vegetables I eat.  I have a weekly subscription of vegetables from my local CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) through Tanaka Farms.  Each week, I receive a box of fresh organic produce that was grown by local farmers.   For about $20, this is what I got this week:
- Broccoli   - Lettuce   - Apples    - Potatoes   - Carrots   - Oranges   - Tomatoes  -Swiss Chard

This week's veggies were not too unique but I've had things were I had to post a picture on Instagram and ask people what the fruit / vegetable is.  I hate to waste food so I am forced to use what's in the box and in turn discover new recipes.  I also love the idea of supporting local farmers.

Panera Bread Autumn squash soup & Thai chicken salad.

Ground turkey with spaghetti sauce with mushroom & Swiss chard on a bed of spaghetti squash and topped with shaved Parmesan cheese.

Green salad with bacon and split pea soup (Recipe)

Left over farro and turkey patty with avocado, Swiss chard & over easy egg.  When I entered all this into myfitnesspal, it was over 600 calories.  I immediately split in half and only ate 1/2 of it.

What I learned this week:
Plan ahead. I was really trying to be discipline this week and made sure I ate as well as I could so that I could enjoy Thanksgiving.  I did give in to bites of homemade strawberry birthday cake this past Saturday at a kid's birthday party.  Before, I would always eat the cake (without the frosting) and told myself it's okay since I didn't eat the frosting. I am trying to make better judgement and only eat cake if they are my favorite or it's really good.  With a young child, we are constantly going to birthday parties where unfortunately is mostly filled with junk food.  I will make sure I eat something before so I will not be tempted.

Plaid + Zebra

Today's look wraps up my week of plaid.

For those that celebrated Thanksgiving yesterday, I hope you had a wonderful time.  Personally, I had tryptophan overload from the consumption of a lot turkey.  The sleepiness makes for poor state for Black Friday shopping.  I have never been brave enough to participate in the craziness of Black Friday.  The thought of fighting crowds and the stress of scoring THE deal just overwhelms me.  I would rather stay at home and eat more turkey.

Unfortunately, I am actually working today and not able to enjoy a nice relaxing day.  I am sure the office will be quiet and I will be able to catch up on reports and all that fun stuff.

Are you a Black Friday shopper?  If yes, what items do you tend to look for?

Plaid + Double Polka Dots

I did not realize when I put this outfit together that it was more appropriate for 4th of July than the upcoming Thanksgiving day.  It's finally cool enough that I can add some layers to my outfits.  I played with some patterns today with mix of polka dots (top & blazer) and plaid skirt.

When it's close to any holidays, do you dress in colors or themes that are tied to the holiday?

Have a great Tuesday!

Subtle Plaid

I am on plaid kick lately and this week I will be sharing some of my recent plaid purchases.  These items were bought before November when I committed to not shopping for clothes until I lose some weight.  So I have been clean of shopping for 25 days which is pretty much a record for me.  I certainly don't need new clothes but the desire for the latest in the stores is always there.  I am doing my best by deleting all the emails before I even open them, not going to the stores or visiting the websites.

How frequently do you shop?  What steps have you taken to help only buy things that are necessary?

Path to Fitness - Week 1

Starting this series is very scary for me because...well who wants to show the world all their flaws and greatest fears.  I thought I only needed to lose 5 more pounds but looking at these pictures, it is probably more like 20 pounds.  But let's just tackle 5 pound at a time.

My goal through this series is to hopefully make me accountable of my eating and fitness because you really can't achieve a leaner body without both.  I will do this post every Saturday to recap what I did for the week and see how it goes.  I am hoping that there are others out there struggling like me and find this inspirational and make changes to a better you too!

Disclosure: I am no healthy expert and I am just doing everything as trial and error.  I will try and share recipes when I can and if you are in the same place I am….please join me on the path to fitness.

I am also listing all the work outs I did and you will see that I primarily Crossfit for my main exercise.  I have been going to Crossfit for about a year and 1/2 and I am addicted to it.  I am most certainly not the strongest or the fastest but that's okay.  The workouts I listed below are modified from the work out that was done that day.  I have had plantar fasciitis on my right foot for the past 6 months which has really hindered my workouts.  It's slowly getting better but boy I did not realize how much you depend on your foot to do even the most basic exercise like lunges.

I am not perfect so I will slip and eat things that are questionable.  I do have strong weakness to snacking and love my chips and candy.  Please don't judge me as I will make mistakes along the way and hopefully find the right path again.

I started this process 2 weeks ago and lost 5 pounds so far.  I am going use today's weight as my starting point for this series.

Current Weight:   146.2 lbs
Current Body Fat:   29.0%

Breakfast
For Breakfast Monday through Friday, I always start with a green smoothie.  I have a Blentec that I just love because it saves me so much time from cutting up things to small pieces.  I typically blend whatever is in my fridge.

Here's a typical green smoothie ingredients:
- Handful of spinach
- 2 leaf of kale
- a carrot
- 1/2 cucumber
- grated ginger
- 4 dates
- small apple
- ice
I blend it and then add a teaspoon of chia seeds and let it sit for 10-15 minutes for it turn gelatin like.

On the weekends, I will have 1/2 sweet potato hash with an egg over easy and a piece of bacon.

Lunch:
Saturday:  Chick-Fil-A 3 piece chicken strips & fruit cup
Sunday:    Pita with steak, hummus & veggies, some of my hubbies chips (restaurant)
Monday:   Salad with goat cheese, beets, mandarin orange, field greens, tomatoes, avocado, carrots, pomegranate with a tablespoon of Trader Joe's champagne vinaigrette dressing
Tuesday:  Steamed asparagus, grilled pork chop (6 oz), sauteed vegetables (mushroom & asparagus) and 1/4 cup cornbread stuffing
Wednesday:  Udon noodles, 2 shrimp tempura, 3 veggie tempura, miso soup, 1/2 cup white rice and tuna sashimi with avocado (restaurant)
Thursday:  Curried cauliflower soup & 1/2 salmon salad (restaurant)
Friday: Salmon & Steak Teriyaki with steamed veggies (restaurant)

Dinner:
Saturday:  Pork Tan Tan Ramen (restaurant)
Sunday:    Collard Greens soup with pork, 1 cornbread muffin with butter
Monday:   Acorn squash stuffed with ground turkey (egg, onion, garlic & Worcestershire sauce) and farro sprinkled with parmesan cheese
Tuesday:   Collard Greens soup with pork, 1 cornbread muffin with butter
Wednesday: Turkey patty 6 oz. (egg, onion, garlic & Worcestershire sauce), 1/2 cup farro, 2 tablespoon turkey gravy, 1 egg over easy cup of steamed carrots & cauliflower
Thursday:  Halibut Fish Chips, sweet potato fries & steamed carrots & cauliflower
Friday: Pho (Vietnamese noodles) and 1 egg roll (restaurant)

Snacks
Snacks is my weakness.  I typically have a snack around 10:30 Monday - Friday.  I also have a bad habit of snacking after my son goes to bed when I am blogging.

What I ate for snacks this week:
Saturday:  Banana before a run, mixed nuts, fun size Snickers
Sunday:  Dried mangoes, fun size Reese's peanut butter cup
Monday: Kind Bar, power berries trail mix (chocolate covered pomegranates, cashews, almonds & dried cranberries), fun size Kit Kat Bar, and 1 petite brownie bite
Tuesday: Power berries mix, roasted plantain chips and 1 petite brownie bite
Wednesday: Glazed donut, power berries trail mix, persimmons
Thursday: Carrot Cake, power berries trail mix
Friday: Glazed donut & power berries trail mix

Exercise
Saturday - Crossfit team of 3 workout: 9x200 m run, 150 front squats at 65 lbs, 150 push press at 65 pounds, 150 wall ball with 14 pounds and 9x200 m run
Sunday - 3 miles at 10:00 pace
Monday - Crossfit - 4 rounds of: 500 m row, 33 sit-ups, 33 hand release push-ups (on my knees), 33 air squats and 400 m run.  Time cap of 35 min time cap.  Finished 3 rounds plus sit-ups & push ups.
Wednesday: Crossfit - 5 rounds (each round you have 3 minutes to complete) 5 touch and go power cleans at 65 lbs, 10 reps of 2 ring rows & 2 air squats, 5 squat clean at 65 lbs, 10 push ups
Thursday: Crossfit - 3 rounds of 10 burpees with 2 ring rows & 2 tricep push ups, 10 burpees box step ups, 10 deadlifts at 125lbs.  Finished off with 400 m run.
Friday: Crossfit - 3 reps of push press at 85 lbs x 7, 5 rounds of: 10 dumbbell deadliest, 6 squat cleans & 4 thrusters @ 25 pound each. Completed in 8:54

Sampling of my meals this week
Stuffed acorn squash with turkey and farro  (recipe adopted from Skinny Taste).  I added a little Parmesan cheese at the last 5 minutes for added more flavor.

Thursday lunch of curried cauliflower soup & salmon salad from Pita Jungle.

Thursday dinner of baked halibut fish and sweet potato fries (both from Trader Joe's) and steamed cauliflower and carrots.

Friday's lunch of salmon & steak teriyaki with steamed veggies.

What I learned this week:
Typing all this out really freaked me out on how much I eat.  I do use myfitnesspal app on my phone to try and gauge my calories.   I was really bad on snacking this week and will need to plan a lot better next week.  I thought I was eating decent but this is a really bad eating week. Putting it all in one spot puts things in a good perspective.  Be honest with yourself and know that there will some bad days and don't beat yourself up.  I normally do not eat this many donuts but had to buy my son donuts with dad day and they wanted glazed and they only came in a dozen.  So I ended up eating them before they went to waste. I know…excuses …excuses.

What would you like to see on this series?  If you are someone that has experienced success through a slow and steady lifestyle change I would love to hear from you and have you featured on this series.

No Brainer

Sometimes I debate about posting photos of me wearing a dress since there is ZERO creativity in this outfit.  All I did was put on a dress and add a jacket and I am ready to go.  This kind of dressing is a no brainer and makes me think maybe that's why I have so many dresses.

Here's to hoping to have a no brainer weekend!

A Little Faux Fur

I love this cardigan because it has a detachable faux fur collar.  Whenever I purchase an item that can be worn multiple ways, I feel like I am getting a super deal.  My mind is easily tricked into these type of things and makes justifying a purchase a lot easier.  Funny thing is, I have never worn this cardigan without the fur collar because I love it so much.

Speaking of shopping, I have kind of put a self imposed shopping ban on clothes until I lose some weight.  I started this about 2 weeks ago and have lost 5 pounds.  I would love to lose another 10 but if I can get to another 5, I will be on cloud 9.  I have to tell you that this has been extremely challenging on me.  The dieting part is not so tough but the not shopping …wow - so so tough.

This past weekend, the Loft had one of their 40% off the entire store deal and I went online and put a couple of things in my cart and almost hit the purchase button.  I really wanted this dress and this skirt because I have always wanted a pretty tulle skirt.  I don't know how many times, I went back and debated but at the end I passed and will stick with my commitment to health.

So I was thinking about doing a weekly roundup of how my progress is on my weight loss.  I am not sure if anyone would be interested.  I was thinking of posting my progress photos (which won't be pretty) and what I eat and how often I exercise.  I figure this would help me make a public commitment and hopefully inspire others to be healthy along the way.  What are your thoughts?

Styled by Sandra

I have always had a tough time wearing monochromatic look unless it was all black.  I saw this picture of Sandra Bullock wearing an all blue outfit and just loved it and had to give it a try.  I think since my top is lace, it adds an interest to the outfit and breaks the all blue look.

This was my first time using a celebrity look to create an outfit.  It's kind of nice not having to think and  just follow.  I think I will start using Pinterest to pin outfits that I have similar items in my closets so I never have to think about getting dressed again.

Do you use Pinterest to help you get dressed?

Paliettes and a Fuzzy Sweater

My Gap boyfriend jeans are back!  I talked enough yesterday about these jeans so let's move on to this fuzzy sweater.  Another item that I debated about keeping because I think it makes me look like a polar bear.  But it's so cuddly (like a bear) that I didn't want to give it up.

I feel like I am wearing a blanket and that's okay with me.  What items have you kept even though it wasn't the most flattering item for you and why did you keep it?

On Repeat

Happy Monday! I hope you had a great weekend.  It was a busy sports weekend for us with my son's last soccer game and first basketball game.  With change of sport….we are finally we are finally seeing a change of temperature in Southern CA and there are cooling temps in our forecast.  I am trying to share the last of my hot weather outfits that I wore last weekend.

Lately, I have been addicted to these boyfriend jeans and don't want to take them off.  I promise you will see them again very soon (like tomorrow).  I remember that I was thinking about returning them when I bought a a long time ago because I did not care for this whisker look which is way too exaggerated on these.  But once I put them one,  I knew they were never going back.  For me, boyfriend jeans are my favorite style not for fit but for comfort.  Growing up, I hated wearing jeans because they felt so stiff to me.  With boyfriend jeans, I never feel like they are stiff or tight.

What is your favorite cut of jeans?

P.S. My girlfriend's 9 year old daughter opened an etsy shop to sell bracelets to raise money for charity.  Please stop by her etsy shop and help her reach her goal of $100 per charity.
