Wanted: Navy Heels

Lately, I have been really drawn to all things navy.  It is a great neutral color that goes with everything but it's not as harsh as black.  I know this may sounds a bit silly since black and navy and really close in color.  I was stumped with what color top to wear with this skirt and navy just felt so right with it.

I have been searching for years for a pair of navy heels.  Most of the navy heels I've seen looked more fitting for a 90 year old grandmother.  I have been looking for heels in leather for comfort but come to realization it's the navy leather that gives any shoe a mature feel. So I was extremely excited when I found these babies in the perfect navy shade and D'orsay style.

I am still on a hunt for a great pair of white heels that will probably have to wait till next summer since all I see are boots in every store.

Heavy Metal

As a kid in the 80s, heavy metal bands were very popular.  I was not a big fan of heavy metal music and did not look like this.  I was into Duran Duran, Michael Jackson and Madonna and wanted to wear a red jacket like the one from the Thriller video or wanting to be cool like Madonna in Lucky Star video.

Fast forward many years later, my music taste have changed a bit and so have my fashion style.  Today's outfit would be my version of heavy metal with the silver details on my sweater and accessories.

What type of music did you enjoy growing up?

What Brings You Back?

I was reading a blog the other day (I know what a surprise right??) and the blogger was a techie blogger wrote about tips to attract readers.  Sorry but I totally forgot what blog it is that I was reading.  I was clicking from blog after blog and didn't save it to read later.  Anyways, one of the tips they mentioned was to tell a story and don't just write a sentence or two about your outfit, recipe etc.

I thought this was interesting because let's say your blog is fashion focus, how many stories can you tell about an outfit?  It's natural to start sharing stories of your own life which some may feel that's too personal.

I think the point of the story is to relate your outfit to a story (how you wore this outfit to the grocery store and was so comfy?) Hope you know I was just kidding.  My take away is that to make yourself more relatable to readers that may have similar experiences.

So what brings you back to blogs?  The clothes or the stories?

Last Saturday, I went to get my haircut.  When I walked into the salon, my girlfriend was wearing some really cute wedges.  She and I were both wearing navy wedges (see mine here).  She actually had the same pair of wedges but had to give them away because it was too small for her.  She had mentioned in the past that her Clarks wedges were too big for her.  We decided to switched for the time while I was getting my hair done and see if they worked better for her.

Bummer for me, mine were too steeped for her to be on her feet all day. All of my girlfriends are much smaller then me and it's very rare that I can borrow clothes from them.

Do you borrow clothes from girlfriends?

Signature Look

It's always been my motto that business clothes does not mean boring.  Sure it's easy to wear a matching suit and I've done that for years and started feeling sort of robotic since everyone else at work wore the same old (black, navy, gray) suit.  I think that by dressing a little more colorful, hopefully people will remember me rather than blend in which is important in a sales job.

I remember someone telling me early in my career that it's important to have a signature "look" that people will remember you by.  This guy's signature look is a sweater vest.  In all the years that I've worked with him, he wears a sweater vest no matter how hot or cold it is.

I don't wear something everyday but my fail safe item is always a pencil skirt and a blazer.  I will call that my signature look plus a splash of color.

What is your signature look?

Double Sequins

Before blogging, I thought that sequins only belonged on prom dresses or something like this which is totally not me.  So anything sequins just never made it into my closet.

Some how by reading fashion blogs, they have also made their way into my wardrobe.  Maybe it's something to do with pretty styles like this skirt or the design is not as over the top as it used it be.  It is probably a little of both.  Now I am all crazy and wear a top and bottom that has sequins!  Call the sequins police, I think I may have overdose on sequins.

You've Got Mail

Mail days can be a good, great or a bad day.  A bad day when I receive bills.  A good day when I get clothing catalogues, I do still enjoy flipping through them.  A great day when I receive letters from family and friends. It's also a great day when I receive an Internet order  It's an extra plus when things I order already come matching.

This was the case of this outfit  No thinking required with this top and skirt  I bought this skirt to wear for fall but it matched the top so perfect so why not.  As you scroll through these photos, see if you can see something in my outfit that doesn't belong there.

Yes, I left the size sticker on it!! It was a stranger that pointed it out to me.

Tell me I am not the only one that this has happened to.

Trench Dress 2 Ways

Hope you all had a nice weekend.  This past weekend, we had a pool party with some of my son's preschool friends.  They have not gone to school together for the past 2 years and it's so nice to see that they all still play so well together.  I really do hope these friendships will last.  I don't have many friends from childhood days since I lived in Hong Kong when I was younger.  My oldest friend is from the 4th grade and though we don't get to see each other much, we do keep in touch via texts and it's like we just saw each other the other day.

Do you have friends that you keep in touch with from childhood?

Now onto this dress... I have always wanted a trench coat (like this beauty here).   A good trench coat is so timeless and will last for years.  But the price and the lack of practicality of it to my lifestyle does not justify the purchase.

So when I saw this trench dress from Ann Taylor, it's a perfect match of what I was looking for.   The material is made of good heavy material of cotton and spandex.  I love that it's sleeveless so I can layer it or wear it as a vest.  I just got this dress last week during Ann Taylor's friends & family 40% off sale and have already worn it twice.

Hand Me Down

I have been back home to Hawaii a couple times this past year and each time my mom has been slowly getting rid of things that she has accumulated over the years.  I have had fun going through old pictures and it's funny that some of the photos, I have no idea who the people are in the photographs besides myself.  It's a sign that I am getting old.

Speaking of getting old, today marks another year for me.  Glad to have my health and family and not  6 feet underground so I can't complain.  We don't have much planned but to cover my grays this weekend.  Now days birthdays are more for my son than me.

I digress, my mom has things from 40+ years ago in the house though we've lived in the house for 20+ years. She still has a really old sewing machine that she brought over from Hong Kong 40 years ago.  I am not sure it works but it makes a great place to put things.  In getting rid of things, she gave me some of her purses that she no longer uses.  This little Gucci is one of the purses she gave me.  I think this purse is circa 1980s, it's in good condition and so classic that it still looks current.

Enjoy your weekend!

I feel so disheveled in these photos and it is because it was hot and I had just eaten my first macaroon ice cream sandwich.  On Instagram, macrons seems to be a great prop for popular bloggers.    They are always holding a box of macaroons in pretty colors waiting to be devoured.  I've had zero desire to try them because they look just very dry to me and prefer a plain old sugar cookie.

A friend of mine posted a picture of some amazing looking macaroon ice cream sandwiches on Facebook and it really intrigued my belly.  We were in the neighborhood the other day and decided to stop by and check out Snow Monster.  This place is in a very old nondescript stripe mall (I don't think it even had any signage up front) but the interior is very quaint.

We shared 2 different flavors:
- Captain crunch macaroon with mint chocolate chip ice cream
- Espresso macaroon with Columbia coffee ice cream

I am pretty sure they made their own ice cream and the flavors and texture was excellent.  Since I've never had a macaroon before, I have nothing to compare it to.  I thought it was like eating any other cookie and really nothing special.  I will need to try another one to determine if it's good or not.

What's your take on macaroons?

Wanted: Nude Sandals

When it comes to shopping, one of my weakness is saying no to shoes.  I love them in all colors, heights and occasions.  Through out the years, I have learned that price does not equal comfort and when it comes to shoes, they have to be comfortable or I will not wear them.

When I am shopping for shoes, I try to look for leather and good padding for the soles of the feet.  This does not always work but it works most of the time.  I probably have around 150-200 pair of shoes and yet there are shoes that are on my want list.

One of the item is a good pair of nude strappy sandals that I can wear for multiple occasion.  I wanted a pair that I could use for work, night out or even on the weekend with shorts.  The nude sandals that I do own sort of either was for work or for the weekend and didn't fit the bill. I also wanted a pair that was closer to my skin tone which is tough to find.  So I was so happy when I ordered these Ann Taylor sandals that they were the perfect color and they were comfortable too!

If you find that perfect shade of nude shoes, they really are the most versatile color pair of of shoes since they can go with everything.  I had no idea what color shoes to wear with this outfit (another want - a good pair of a navy shoes) and my new sandals came to the rescue.

What is your weakness when it comes to shopping?

A Compliment

I work in 10 story high office building and you get to see the same faces day in and day out.  Most time, you see their faces and may say Hi but that's probably the extent of your interaction.  When I wore this outfit the other day, I was complimented on my outfit and my shoes on several occasion.  Getting a nice compliment from a stranger always makes my day.

I am not sure what generated the compliments since I wear bright colors all the time.  Could it be the shoes or is it the bright full skirt that caught attention in a sea of office black, navy and white?

So if something catches your eye, give a stranger a sincere compliment.  Have a great day!
