Throw Back Thursday Link Up: Halloween

In honor of one of my favorite holidays, I thought I would dress all black.  I am not a fan of dressing in overly holiday theme colors or holiday printed clothes since you can only use it for that particular season.  For this Halloween, I will probably wear an all black outfit to the office.

The reason I love Halloween is for dressing up in costumes.  It's the one time of the year when an grown woman can dress as a princess, a superhero or even a slutty nurse and it's okay.  Speaking of costumes, why are so many of the woman costumes so revealing?  Is it because it is the one day of year where exposing all your goodies is okay??

I am not okay with exposing anything and like to keep things pretty family rated.  We have been dressing up as a family for the past few years and theme of course is centered around whatever my son wants be for Halloween.

Do you dress up for Halloween?  If you do, what's your costume this year?

Here's our costume for this year.  My husband is suppose to be Superman/Clark Kent.  He is not quite done with his costume yet.  I think he needs to switch to a white dress shirt and add some black rim glasses.

It's become a tradition that we host a Halloween party for my son's with friends that he's had since he was in diapers.   We don't get to see each other often but it's always a great time when we meet.

Another reason I love Halloween is all the fun food you can make. We had so much food and everything was so tasty.  My son was my sous chef.  He assisted in scooping out the pumpkin seeds, made the mummy dogs, orange pumpkins and spider cookies.  His told me his favorite job was making the spider cookies since he was able to eat the cracked oreos.

My girlfriend made this cool 7 year dip., I loved how she used olives to make the skull. The 2nd picture on the right side is a pumpkin rice casserole dish (Recipe here).  It's not the healthiest but it is so good.  There's this pumpkin soup that I've would like to give it a try to.  Have anyone made this?  I would love to hear how it turns out.

Here's a look back at our costume last year (Halloween 2013).

Leopard Layers

When I bought this cropped sweater, I knew that I would never wear it exposing my mid section (way too scary).  But I knew I could not wait to wear it layered.  We finally got a few cooler days so I was able to wear it with a blouse.  Unfortunately, the warm weather is back this week (in the upper 80s) so  it's back to summer clothes.

What trend have you been afraid of and tried and make it work for you?

Now & Later: Black Lace

Happy Monday!  I hope everyone had a great weekend.  We had a busy weekend of soccer and Halloween fun.  We hosted a Halloween party for my son & his friends and it was a blast.  I will share more on that later this week.

This lace top from H & M has been a great staple in my closet.  I have not worn it much on the blog but I use it all the time.  The top is sleeveless with a higher neckline that has a button in the middle.  I can't stand necklines that feels like it's choking my neck (I can never wear a turtle neck) so I never have the buttoned up.  I am more comfortable but my hair gets all tangled around the button.

Here are 2 ways that I've worn this black lace top for fall and for the summer.

Throw Back Thursday Fashion Link Up: Nike Woman's 1/2 Marathon - San Francisco

Welcome to Throw Back Thursday Fashion Link Up!  Today, I am going all the way back to last weekend with my girls trip to San Francisco for the Nike Half Marathon Run.  I apologize in advance if there are a lot of pictures but I had so much fun that I wanted to share my weekend with you.

First with what I wore.  I always check the weather before I pack and San Francisco is known for cooler temps and fog.  So I packed jeans and light layers.  I had to work on Friday so I could not wear jeans and had to leave straight from the office to the airport.  As much as I thought I research the weather, I was wrong - it was too hot to feel like foggy & cold that I was craving.

This was also the first time I've ever packed a weekend with just a carryon.  This was a challenge for me, I do not know how to pack efficiently especially since I had to bring my running stuff.  So I decided to behave and only bring my running shoes, a pair of flip flops and whatever shoes I was wearing as footwear.  Knowing that I was going to be doing a lot of walking, I decide on the boots from Shoemint I got last year.  I walked for miles with them through the city and they were so comfy.  I also brought a big tote to carry a smaller handbag & my sweater and junk.  BTW, brining the tote to the market was such a great idea to carry my goodies and the City of San Francisco is very green and charges for bags so it was perfect way to save a few pennies and be green too.

Now on to my trip.  We really did not have much time to do much in about 48 hours.  We got in Friday afternoon and headed over to the Nike expo and then have a fabulous dinner.

Saturday, we started the day visiting the Farmer's Market at the Ferry Building.  Every time I visit San Francisco, I always try to go to the market if I am there on Saturdays.  It's nothing like the farmer's markets where I live.  They have a ton of vendors that sell such exotic fruits and vegetables that I've never seen before.  I wished I could've bought some of it home with me.

There's a coffee vendor by the name of Blue Bottle Coffee that has crazy lines.  I don't drink coffee so I can not tell you anything about good/bad of it.  We were standing in line and the people in front of us ordered a cafe affogato (which is basically ice cream with fresh coffee poured on top of it).  It looked so guess what.  Yup - we shared ice cream for breakfast!

If you are wondering what I am holding, it's sunflower seeds still on the stem.

The four of us had a blast eating and spending time together.  Sunday morning was the day of the race.  The course was beautiful running through the city.  Nike puts on a great event with entertainment throughout the race and great partnerships sponsoring the event.  There were several stations from Nuetrogena that offered face wipes (which feels incredible when you a sweaty mess) and they were passing out truffles at mile 11.

Of course, like the 25,000 fellow runners, we had our sights on the trophy - the Tiffany necklace.  Each year Nike unveils a new design and at the end of the race, you can even take pictures with a fireman in tuxedo.  I elected not to stand in the crazy long lines to get the photograph.

A Little Bit of French Hens

Awhile back, I was really drawn to cute prints as exhibited by the fox sweater (here) and an owl sweater (here).  During this time, I also picked up a french hen blouse from  J Crew.  I've come to realized that whimsical prints for me are strictly for weekends and probably too cute for my office. So this blouse has been sitting in my closet for over a year.

This past week we had some cooler temps that I was able to actually wear a sweater and layered it with my french hen blouse.  I feel a lot more comfortable wearing just a bit of whimsical print at the office rather than the just by itself.

What do you think about whimsical prints for the office environment?

Peplum Blazer - Style Challenged

Happy Monday!  I am back from a wonderful girls weekend in San Francisco and happy to report that I survived the race.  I will share more about my trip later this week.  I got back home Sunday night and just need time to get chores done and the week ready.

In the mean time, I need your help with this peplum blazer.  This blazer really caught my eye from the cut, the pattern to the colors.  The colors in the blazer are black, white and burgundy.  As you can see, I am not very creative when it comes to wearing this jacket.  I've worn it both pretty much with the colors in the jacket.

The jacket does not look good open so it does need to be buttoned up.  I would probably wear it with jeans or pair with gray or white but other than that I stumped.  I am not sure how I feel about mixing patterns with such a plaid that goes different directions and I struggle with incorporating colors that is not in the jacket.

I would love to hear what ideas you have.  Thanks!

Throw Back Thursday: Cloche Hat

In the summer, I use wide brim hats all time time to protect my face from the sun all season long.  In the fall, I don't use hats as often probably because the days are shorter.  In the blogging world, big woolly floppy hats are very popular.  I did give into temptation and bought a floppy hat from Old Navy that I will wear one of these days.

In the meantime, I will this my cloche hat I bought last year.

My girlfriends and I are doing the Nike 1/2 Marathon in San Francisco.  I am nervous but so excited for this weekend.  Excited for the girls weekend and all the great food I will be having but nervous for all the hills during the race.  I have been training and should be ready even if I have to crawl, I will earn my Tiffany necklace.  Follow me on Instagram (@happinessatmidlife) if you are interested in seeing the necklace once I earn it.

What plans do you have for this weekend?

I have never seen the show Scandal but friends that do watch it rave about it.  The Limited recently released a collaboration between Kerry Washington who plays Olivia Pope on the show and the show's costume designer, Lyn Paolo.  The line is based on Olivia Pope' style which is mainly pastels and white with clothes that makes a woman feel glamorous, sexy, smart and powerful.

I have to say, this collaboration fits right up my alley.  The pieces are stunning in person and very well made.  I wanted to buy the whole collection since it is perfect for the office and it did have very nice touches to make me feel feminine at the same time.  I resisted and just picked up this stunning dress.

If you are familiar with this show, do you recommend it?  I think the first season is on Netflix so I will probably watch it when I have some time.
