What Not to Wear When Traveling

I am back!!! Last week, I attended a work conference at Lake Las Vegas.  If you ever want to go to some place in the middle of nowhere, this is the place to be.  There is absolutely nothing there! It was so sad to see a shopping area with pretty much 100% vacancy.  The nearest casino shopping area was about 20 minutes away and a $30 cab ride.  I felt like I was at high end prison (not that I've been to prison).

When I travel, I am always afraid I would be late and miss my flight so I always try to get to the airport about 2 hours before my flight.  My flight was 10:45 am and I left my house at 8 am with a coworker to take advantage of carpool.  I live about 45 minutes away from the airport and thought that having carpool should get me to the airport in plenty of time even in rush hour traffic.  I had way too much faith in Los Angeles traffic and let's just say that by the time I sat on the plane, I had 10 minutes before take off.  It was the most stressful travel day of my life.

My conference started at 1:30 so I knew I had no time to change and had to wear what I plan to wear the whole day.  The dress code was business casual which for me is such a difficult concept.  I work in the banking industry and the standard is a suit.  I rarely wore suits to work so I feel I am already pretty casual and thought that what I have planned is considered business casual.

So I think this outfit suits the day and let me explain why this outfit was so bad for traveling:

Heels - I am a heel girl at heart and always thought I could wear them all day and my feet would be fine.  As I mentioned, I did not have much time making it to the airport so I had to walk briskly to make my flight.  I have forgotten how far gates are from the where you check in and I had to lug my laptop (that feels like it weights 50 pounds) with me.  My feet were barking at me by the time I got on the plane.  With a short flight (45 minutes), I had to walk briskly from the plane to the baggage claim.

What was I thinking?? I think I have been watching too many movies with people in heels at the airport that make walking in them is a simple task.

Polyester - is the enemy!  Hotel conference rooms are always cold so I thought wearing a long sleeve polyester blouse with a trench dress made a lot of sense. I swear that I wanted to be naked by the time I made it on the plane.  I feel I looked liked I ran a marathon after making the walk to the plane.

Even though it was a stressful travel day, I am glad that I learned these travel mistakes and did not wear heels or polyester on the way home.

What are some of your tips for business travel?
