How Crossfit is like the Blogging Community

This past Friday was the start of Crossfit Open where pretty much everyone can compete for a spot in the Crossfit Games.  For a month, each week they announce a new workout that each athlete must complete and then is ranked amongst everyone.  The workout on Friday was 20 minutes and in Crossfit world, that is a long time.  Let's just say that my body was achy on Saturday.

I am obviously not a competitive Crossfit athlete and the reality is I can't do a lot of the movements but that's okay.  I really enjoy the workouts and how it makes fee and the friendships I have formed.

So why is Crossfit like blogging?
  1. We have our own secret language.  In Crossfit there's so many acronyms and terminology that I am still confused after 4 years.   We fashion bloggers have our own language like #ootd, link ups,  and page views.
  2. It's a great community.  One of the things that people that Crossfit do is talk about Crossfit.  We will text our friends and talk about the workout of the day.  We become more than workout buddies and become real friends.  I have surely made some friends in the blogging world that I would not have otherwise.
  3. Some days you want to give up.  I don't now how many workouts that I wanted to throw in the towel because it was the workout was just so challenging.  Having friends cheering you on that makes me not give up.  You all know I've been contemplating about quitting a few times and it's friends like you that keep me going.

So if you ever thought about trying Crossfit, just do it.  I know you will love it like blogging.

Throw Back Thursday Fashion Link Up: Stripe Pants

These pants that I purchased last year have made several appearances on the blog (hereherehere, & here) and have been in the spotlight for TBT Fashion Link Up before.  Since I love them so much, I thought I would share another looks with them again.  I am keeping up with my love of stripes this week wearing a whole lot of stripes today.

One of my favorite books from Stephen King 11/22/63 has been made into a short series on Hulu. I watched the first episode and I am hooked!  I love Stephen King's books because there's always so many twists and turns and I have no idea how he dreams ups the crazy plots.

Books are always better movies and 11/22/63 was one of those books that I am glad they made it into a series.  I was in love with the main character and it's fun to see it on screen and compare it to how you imagine a characters to be and who they cast.

Any books that you've enjoyed and have been pleased with the movie?

Play on Stripes

I remember there were days that I avoided stripes like the black plague.  Growing up, that was one of those rules I read in Teen Glamour magazine or something similar that says to avoid stripes unless you want to look wide.  I now can't get enough of stripes and every time I see it at the store, I have to stop myself to add more to my closet.

I focused on some stripes on stripes today with my top and skirt.  Adding the poncho to keep me warm and not to overwhelm the eyes too much stripes.  I then added these strappy flats which is sort a a play on stripes.

I have been reading fashion and health related magazine since I was a teen and I am not so sure the topics have changed much.  In my younger years, it was more about focused on what to wear to prom,  how to deal with acne and things of that nature.  Now the magazines I read focus on what to wear to a black tie affair, to brunch etc or how to handle changes to your body as you age.  Topics are pretty similar but just geared towards an older audience.  I try not to read too many magazines now days because everything starts to look similar and the topics are all the same.  I guess it took about 20+ years for me to realize it is sort of a waste of money to buy these types of magazines.

Do you read magazines?  Which ones are you into?

Throw Back Thursday Fashion Link Up: Plaid Slip Ons

I have been blogging consistently now for almost 4 years and I have been on the fence about quitting.  This past week, I was away from work and had zero time to read blogs, check out Instagram or any other form of social media.

With the blog,  I have always stayed true to my style and adopted to trends that work for my lifestyle. I rarely put an outfit together to post for the sake of the blog.  So this is me in my normal weekend wear nothing fancy but totally comfy and functional.

Here's a few things I enjoyed this past week.

I did not dressed for the blog.  I always try to look ahead and participate in theme link ups on blogs or Instagram.  I normally do my posts during the weekend so that means I have to wear the outfit the week before to have the photos ready.  With that said, it takes some planning.

I did not need to think of a story with my outfit.  Let's face it, we all wear clothes so that's the easy part.  The tough part is finding something of interest to write about.  I am constantly surprised that I am still writing though I am sure I've repeated myself many times.

It's okay to unplug from social media.  As bloggers, you probably want more followers, more comments so that sponsors reach out to you and and you get free things in exchange for exposure.  I am not going to lie, it's pretty fun to get free things but is really worth the hard work to gain followers?  I probably spend more time promoting an item than the product is worth.  I think I will just continue to buy my own clothes.

What Not to Wear When Traveling

I am back!!! Last week, I attended a work conference at Lake Las Vegas.  If you ever want to go to some place in the middle of nowhere, this is the place to be.  There is absolutely nothing there! It was so sad to see a shopping area with pretty much 100% vacancy.  The nearest casino shopping area was about 20 minutes away and a $30 cab ride.  I felt like I was at high end prison (not that I've been to prison).

When I travel, I am always afraid I would be late and miss my flight so I always try to get to the airport about 2 hours before my flight.  My flight was 10:45 am and I left my house at 8 am with a coworker to take advantage of carpool.  I live about 45 minutes away from the airport and thought that having carpool should get me to the airport in plenty of time even in rush hour traffic.  I had way too much faith in Los Angeles traffic and let's just say that by the time I sat on the plane, I had 10 minutes before take off.  It was the most stressful travel day of my life.

My conference started at 1:30 so I knew I had no time to change and had to wear what I plan to wear the whole day.  The dress code was business casual which for me is such a difficult concept.  I work in the banking industry and the standard is a suit.  I rarely wore suits to work so I feel I am already pretty casual and thought that what I have planned is considered business casual.

So I think this outfit suits the day and let me explain why this outfit was so bad for traveling:

Heels - I am a heel girl at heart and always thought I could wear them all day and my feet would be fine.  As I mentioned, I did not have much time making it to the airport so I had to walk briskly to make my flight.  I have forgotten how far gates are from the where you check in and I had to lug my laptop (that feels like it weights 50 pounds) with me.  My feet were barking at me by the time I got on the plane.  With a short flight (45 minutes), I had to walk briskly from the plane to the baggage claim.

What was I thinking?? I think I have been watching too many movies with people in heels at the airport that make walking in them is a simple task.

Polyester - is the enemy!  Hotel conference rooms are always cold so I thought wearing a long sleeve polyester blouse with a trench dress made a lot of sense. I swear that I wanted to be naked by the time I made it on the plane.  I feel I looked liked I ran a marathon after making the walk to the plane.

Even though it was a stressful travel day, I am glad that I learned these travel mistakes and did not wear heels or polyester on the way home.

What are some of your tips for business travel?

Throw Back Thursday Fashion Link Up: Blue Tweed Jacket

I am girly girl at heart and love to wear pretty dresses that  I can twirl around in.  I don't really feel right wearing extremely girly outfits to work and I think for me this outfit is the balance of professional meets the young girl at heart.

The sequins and the feminine colors of this outfit fulfills the girly touch. While the pearls, the tweed jacket and pencil skirt fulfills my professional work uniform.

Any big plans for this weekend?  Being that it's SuperBowl Sunday, we will be heading over to a friend's house to "watch" football.  I say watch loosely since I think I will be doing more eating and chatting that watching football.  I am really looking forward to seeing Coldplay perform the 1/2 time show.  I have seen them in concert and they are amazing.

Have a great weekend!

FYI - I am going to be out of town for work next week and won't have time to blog. TBT Fashion Link Up will be back February 18th.
